You know, I'd seen this painting many times, as it's in the collection at our local museum. And every time I'd look at the title (Looking Out to Sea) and think, "No they're not." When I needed to write an ekphrastic poem, I started scanning through the online collection and when I saw this one I thought, "Aha! I can finally correct this mistake." I so glad you enjoyed it!

What a fun poem. I love the sense of voice.

I write a lot of ekphrastic poems. I use pictures as prompts for writing exercises-- sometimes something halfway good emerges.

Thanks, Melanie. I'll take any kind of prompt if it gets the ink flowing. I should use artwork more often.

My sister likes to share a lot of art on Facebook. Sometimes I just write little poems as comments under the pictures. (Of course I also copy and save them.) But I like strewing little bits of poetry without other comment.

This is great fun, Tara! I love how you took the painting and created this poem and turned it all upside down.

Now I want a painting of the two idiots but you have painted that scene perfectly. I enjoyed this so much. I can't believe you've only written one ekphrastic poem. Will we be seeing more?
